The "marinera" is one of the many traditional dances of Peru, it is a very difficult dance to learn but almost every boy and girl from the coast of Peru has tried it at least one in his/her life, because it is always teached at schools and there are many academys where you can learn. Also, there are many festivals and contest and even there is an annual "national champion" of marinera in Peru.
The marinera is a couples dance, and has many varietys, whether it is from the north or the south, for example, you can find marinera dancers barefoot or you can also find the dancers with shoes, but something that always stays is that the woman has a hankerchief in one hand and the man usually wears a hat, and also the woman has a great dress which moves a lot and the woman always take the end of the dress with one hand so shw used to dance as well.
The dance is an elegant and stylized reenactment of a courtship, and it shows a blend of the different cultures of Peru. In many cities along the coast of Peru you can find recitals and shows where you can enjoy a beautiful marinera, specially in Lima because it is the biggest city but also in Chiclayo and Trujillo, which are located in the northern region of Peru.
Also, many restaurants of typical food in Peru offer a small show where the Marinera is always present!! Here you can have a sneak peek of this great dance!!!
